Every November, National Diabetes Month draws attention to a growing reality for many South Africans: living with diabetes requires constant balance. From counting carbohydrates to tracking glucose levels, the daily management of the condition can be both physically and mentally demanding.
What’s often less discussed, however, is the nutritional gap that can develop when food choices become limited. Strict dietary requirements can make it difficult for people with diabetes to get all the vitamins and minerals their bodies need for optimal health. Over time, that can affect everything from energy levels and immune function to the body’s ability to handle stress.
“People living with diabetes often have to make very deliberate food choices, which means certain nutrients can easily fall short,” explains Dr Inga Koopmann, Scientific Consultant at Doppelherz®. “That’s where supplementation can be helpful, not to replace food, but to support the body in maintaining balance.”
Nutrients such as B-vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, zinc and chromium are particularly important. Chromium, for instance, contributes to healthy glucose metabolism, while B-vitamins and magnesium help the body convert food into energy. Ensuring these micronutrients are available in the right amounts can make a difference in how the body responds to everyday demands.
Diabetes doesn’t only affect blood sugar, it impacts multiple systems throughout the body. When nutritional gaps persist, people may be more vulnerable to fatigue, reduced immunity and oxidative stress, all of which can complicate long-term management.
“Managing diabetes isn’t only about controlling glucose levels,” says Dr Koopmann, “it’s also about supporting the body as a whole, protecting cells, maintaining energy, and keeping the immune and nervous systems functioning well.”
One supplement designed with these needs in mind is Doppelherz® aktiv Vitamins for Diabetics, which combines essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements, including six B-vitamins, vitamins C, E and H (biotin), folic acid, magnesium, zinc, chromium and selenium. The formulation is suitable for people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and can be taken daily alongside a balanced diet and prescribed care.
While there’s no substitute for healthy eating and regular medical care, targeted nutritional support can help fill the gaps that diet alone may not cover. For those living with diabetes, that could mean more stable energy, better resilience and improved overall wellbeing.
As Dr Koopmann concludes: “With the right awareness, nutrition and medical guidance, living well with diabetes becomes less about restriction, and more about the right support.”
