Sonic Toothbrushes
Every year on 3 December, the world observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a reminder to celebrate inclusion, spark awareness and champion innovations that help make everyday life more accessible. While groundbreaking medical or tech advancements often make headlines, it’s the small, practical tools that often make the biggest difference to someone’s daily independence.
For many people living with physical or motor-skill challenges, everyday tasks can take more time, energy and planning. Even brushing your teeth, something most of us do without thinking, can become a real challenge. That’s why the Balene toothbrush, designed in Spain, is making such a meaningful impact.
What sets the Balene toothbrush apart is its clever, dual-sided design. Both the manual and sonic versions clean the inside, outside and chewing surfaces of the teeth at the same time. This means less effort, fewer movements and a more thorough clean, especially helpful for anyone with limited mobility, dexterity or strength.
The 180° rotating head and 45-degree angled bristles make it easier to clean along the gumline with minimal wrist movement. Balene was created to make brushing easier for everyone, but it has become a particularly empowering tool for people with additional physical needs.
“Balene brushes really help patients with mental or physical challenges to get to the areas in the mouth where traditional brushes simply can’t,” says Danette Smit, Oral Hygienist and part of the Ivohealth team. “It’s a small change in design, but it has a huge impact on independence and oral health.”

For Alex Boettger, who lived with congenital muscular dystrophy, Balene was more than a toothbrush, it was a step toward greater autonomy.
“It was cool to be given the freedom in the small things such as brushing my teeth, and it was something I’d never even thought would have such an impact on my day, my mood and my outlook,” he shared.
Stories like Alex’s highlight what IDPD is truly about: dignity, independence and inclusion. While accessibility is often discussed in terms of buildings, transport or workplaces, it also lives in the most personal spaces, in the daily rituals that allow someone to care for themselves.

As conversations around accessibility grow, Balene is a powerful example of how thoughtful design can support independence. Meaningful change doesn’t always require complex technology or large-scale infrastructure, sometimes it begins with rethinking the everyday tools we use without a second thought.
Because for many people, being able to manage small, personal routines isn’t just practical, it’s deeply empowering. In these moments, confidence grows. Dignity is protected. Freedom expands.
And that is exactly what IDPD invites us to celebrate.
